Travelocity vs. CheapOair – Flight to Las Vegas
I ran a quick comparison today of airfare for one person between Dallas (DFW) and Las Vegas (LAS). I booked ahead by 2 weeks for flights leaving on Sunday and returning Wednesday. Here are the results…
Easy Reservation Process
Both sites were very easy to use. I only had to enter the dates and departure and destination cities and the sites showed me a list of the airfares for several competing airlines (all prices were mysteriously THE SAME). I chose American Airlines and when I clicked American it opened a page with all the American flights to Las Vegas. I chose the same departure and return flights on both travel websites and they both came up with the same prices. It’s a good price too – $218 round trip from Dallas to Las Vegas.
Travelocity then offered me some Las Vegas travel package deals that included hotel and flight. The travel packages are great deals and there is a wide selection of hotels to choose from. For example, I could stay at the Wynn Las Vegas for a total cost of $738. So that’s $218 for the flight and $173 per night at the hotel. The daily cost would be different if there were 2 or more traveling. Another example is the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino for $521 total cost. That’s only $101 per night. (One note, these costs are without taxes and fees.)
Travelocity also offered trip insurance for $20. The insurance looks pretty good – here’s the link Travelocity Trip Insurance.
Which is the Best Deal?
Travelocity charged lower fees (I don’t think the charged any fees). The total cost for Travelocity was $239.20. The total cost of the CheapOair flight was $263.20. So even though the price of the flight was the same, the total cost at the end was less at Travelocity.
Coupons and Discounts
I found a coupon promo code for CheapOair for $10 off the flight which brings the cost down to $253.20 – only $14 difference. Here’s the CheapOair coupon code. I did not find any coupon codes for Travelocity, but the price was already lower and the vacation package deals were already great.
And the Winner IS…
Travelocity by a nose!
Well, they were both pretty darn good. Both sites were easy to use and didn’t give you the run around. Travelocity offered the hotel package deals which introduced an additional step into the process, but it was a worthwhile step if you are looking for a hotel, and if you’re not looking for a hotel it was easy to bypass. Travelocity tried to upsell on the trip insurance, but that was also a pretty good deal and something to consider. The trip insurance is also easy to skip over if you don’t want it. So based on the final price of the flight, and the attractive Las Vegas vacation package deals, I choose Travelocity as the winner of this challenge. Your results may be slightly different, so you should check both to make sure. It will only take about 5 minutes to cross-check the prices so why not?
